Fisheries Catch-22: Captive Breeding Aims To Conserve Biodiversity But Plunders Genetic Diversity
Human impacts on the environment have reduced populations of wild species to dangerously low levels. Nowhere is this more apparent than in worldwide fisheries, where thanks to overfishing and habitat destruction, countless species and populations of fish are on the brink of disappearing forever. To attempt to mitigate the dire situation, captive breeding, the controlled breeding of organisms in protected environments, is regularly initiated.

New Technique Is Quantum Leap Forward In Understanding Proteins
Proteins drive critical functioning in the cells of everything from bacteria to humans. But deciphering genomic data to discover just how the thousands upon thousands of proteins in a given organism interact has emerged as one of the most confounding biological challenges of the new century. The new method should enable the development of new antibiotics and other drugs.

Indicators for metabolic disturbances in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome diagnosed according to the Rotterdam consensus criteria
BACKGROUND

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with metabolic abnormalities. It is debated whether all women with PCOS should be screened for metabolic abnormalities as these may vary with PCOS phenotype, age and ethnicity. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities in Dutch anovulatory PCOS women and to define criteria for metabolic screening.

METHODS

Anovulatory patients, diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam consensus criteria, underwent metabolic screening. Through stepwise multivariate analysis patient characteristics associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR) were evaluated for their use as selection parameters for metabolic screening.

RESULTS

Overall, prevalence of MetS and IR was 15.9% (n = 25) and 14% (n = 22), respectively, in 157 PCOS women (age 29.0 ± 4.8 years, BMI 26.1 ± 6.7 kg/m2). Anovulatory hyperandrogenic women (with or without polycystic ovaries) had more often MetS and IR (with, 20.8 and 19.8%; without, 100 and 40%, respectively) than non-hyperandrogenic PCOS women (0 and 1.8%; P < 0.001). Waist circumference >83.5 cm along with increased free androgen index (FAI) had the most powerful association with the presence of MetS and IR (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.912) and offered a reduction in the necessity of screening for metabolic derailments of about 50%.

CONCLUSIONS

The hyperandrogenic PCOS phenotypes are highly linked to the presence of MetS and IR in Dutch PCOS women. Waist circumference combined with FAI was identified as an efficient combination test to select those PCOS women who should be screened for the presence of MetS and/or IR.

Naked Scientists 08.07.20 - Discovering Drugs
Drug Discovery: On this week's Naked Scientists, drug development goes under the microscope as we explore two new ways to find the treatments of tomorrow. We find out why size is important when it comes to chemicals that can kill superbugs, and how soil bacteria hold the chemical clues to the next generation of antibiotics. Plus, how sheets of carbon can be used to reveal single atoms of hydrogen beneath the microscope, how scientists have homed in on the part of the brain linked to obsessive compulsive disorder, and why electronically tagging jellyfish can tell us a sea turtle's secrets. Plus, in Kitchen Science, we make strange and unexpected shapes with bubbles!

Effect of Solanum lycocarpum Aqueous Extracts in Helminth Parasites of Conventionally Maintained Laboratory Mice
This approach intends to add new data on the helminthes parasites of laboratory mice. It has been investigated the anthelmintic activity of Solanum lycocarpum (Solanaceae) extracts against Vampirolepis nana and Aspiculuris tetraptera in mice naturally infected. The extracts were applied for oral saw (intragastric), into the volume of 0.04 mL g-1, with the employing of a dead and bend probe during three consecutive days. The fecal material, collected 24 h after each application, performing a total of four fecal collection, have been softened previously, transferred about to sieve of network of 125 µm and tested under microscope stereoscope, with the objective of behave the identification and counting from the worms eliminated of the second to the fifth day of the experimental. Tukey-Kramer Multiple Comparisons Test was applied to compare the results. According to the analysis of the results it was observed that there were no differences in the % of elimination to the concentration of 10% between TM and UR (from 28.4±3.55 to 29.2±2.92) and statistical differences between TM and C (from 28.4±3.55 to 15.0±1.5) and UR and C (from 29.2±2.92 to 15.0±1.5). To the concentration of was observed that there were differences in the of eliminating between TM and UR (from 30.9±3.43 to 7.7±1.1) and C (from 30.9±3.43 to 15±1.5) related to the experimental which the animal was infecting with Vampirolepis nana. To the concentration of 5% it was observed that there were no differences in the % of elimination between TM and UR (from 4.18±3.33 to 3.70±3.16), TM and C (from 4.18±3.33 to 1.56±3.16) and UR and C (from 3.70±3.16 to 1.56±3.16) related to the experimental which the animal was infected with Aspiculuris tetraptera. It was described that in the chemical analysis of the studied extract there is the presence of glycoalkaloids, a finding that represents a reason for concern since many of these substances are generally toxic and maybe anthelmintic. It was published that medicinal plants which were reported as useful in the treatment of diabetes the S. lycocarpum was the sixth most frequently mentioned. According to the results obtained in the present study, we can speculate that the anthelmintic effect of S. lycocarpum would be related to the action of steroidal alkaloid oligoglycosides as well as the presence of short-chain fatty acids as well as with the concentration of the referred compounds in the extracts.

* Seminar: "Informal Learning"
Facilitators: Sarah Haavind and Nancy White
May 15 - June 4, 2006 (and beyond)
This seminar on informal learning was... very informal! In keeping with the topic we even became challenged by some of the constraints brought on by our own traditions here in SCoPE -- schedules, topics, facilitator roles and style, the label "seminar", and even closure. Who decides when a seminar on informal learning should end? Nobody! So naturally the only thing to do is leave the discussion open, and thanks to Sarah Haavind and Nancy White it will remain loosely facilitated. There are some real gems in there around the campfire, so gather 'round and keep the embers warm!

* Seminar: "Enhancing and Extending the Classroom through Learning Communities"
Facilitator: Stephanie Chu
During this 17-day seminar the core question was how learning communities enhance and extend (and replace?) the classroom experience for our students. Valuable stories and examples were shared, and of course more questions were posed! We are left with many topics waiting to be explored further relating to purpose, longevity, scope, and design of student learning communities. Sounds like a part 2 seminar is in order! A special thanks is owning to Innovative Educators http://www.innovativeeducators.org for allowing us to share the archives of their webinar series with the SCoPE community.

7.340 Ubiquitination: The Proteasome and Human Disease, Fall 2004 (MIT)
This seminar provides a deeper understanding of the post-translational mechanisms evolved by eukaryotic cells to target proteins for degradation. Students learn how proteins are recognized and degraded by specific machinery (the proteasome) through their previous tagging with another small protein, ubiquitin. Additional topics include principles of ubiquitin-proteasome function, its control of the most important cellular pathways, and the implication of this system in different human diseases. Finally, speculation on the novel techniques that arose from an increased knowledge of the ubiquitin-proteosome system and current applications in the design of new pharmacological agents to battle disease is also covered.

Hi-tech Vaccine Designed By Students Shows Promise Against Ulcer Causing Bacteria
Almost half of the world population is infected with bacteria Helicobacter pylori which colonizes stomach, causing gastritis and ulcers and is recognized by WHO as a type I carcinogen. Current antibacterial treatment, implemented after the seminal discovery that H. pylori infection is the underlying cause of ulcers, which brought the discoverers the Nobel Prize in 2005, requires combination of at least three different drugs to eliminate bacteria.

Eric Holder's NFL steroid-scandal involvement [Dr. Joan Bushwell's Chimpanzee Refuge]

Barack Obama's pick for the top cop in the United States has an interesting past, having been enlisted by the NFL to combat the onslaught of congressional hearings and other forms of bad publicity last year.

The attorney-general-to-be and deputy attorney general under Bill Clinton was a partner in Covington & Burling, a D.C. law firm that has long extended services to the NFL. Since 2001, Holder has been involved in the investigation of the dog-fighting charges against Michael Vick, the implementation of the rule requiring team owners to interview minority candidates for coaching vacancies, and the league's personal-conduct crackdown, some elements of which have reached silly proportions.

Holder and his supporting cast did not get what they hoped for last year, and law-enforcement officials have called his efforts a mere attempt to keep the league from suffering further black eyes rather than an earnest attempt to curb a performance-enhancing drug problem:

The story of human cytomegalovirus and cancer: increasing evidence and open questions.
Authors: Michaelis M, Doerr HW, Cinatl J Although human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is generally not regarded to be an oncogenic virus, HCMV infection has been implicated in malignant diseases from different cancer entities. On the basis of our experimental findings, we developed the concept of "oncomodulation" to better explain the role of HCMV in cancer. Oncomodulation means that HCMV infects tumor cells and increases their malignancy. By this concept, HCMV was proposed to be a therapeutic target in a fraction of cancer patients. However, the clinical relevance of HCMV-induced oncomodulation remains to be clarified. One central question that has to be definitively answered is if HCMV establishes persistent virus replication in tumor cells or not. In our eyes, recent clinical findings from...
