Embryo donation produces a family structure where neither rearing parent is genetically related to the child, as in adoption. It is not known how embryo donation parents view the donors compared with how adoptive parents view the birth parents. 21 couples with an embryo donation child aged 2–5 years were compared with 28 couples with an adopted child. Parents were administered a semi-structured interview, assessing knowledge of the donors/birth parents, frequency of thoughts and discussions about the donors/birth parents and disclosure of the donor conception/adoption to the child. Comparisons were made between mothers and fathers to examine gender differences. Embryo donation parents generally knew only the donors’ physical characteristics, and thought about and talked about the donors less frequently than adoptive parents thought about and talked about the birth parents. Embryo donation fathers tended to think about the donors less often than did mothers. Disclosure of the child's origins in embryo donation families was far less common than in adoptive families (P < 0.001 for mothers and fathers), and was associated with the level of donor information (P < 0.05 for mothers, P < 0.025 for fathers). Embryo donation parents’ views on the donors differ from adoptive parents’ views on the birth parents, with donors having little significance in family life once treatment is successful. |

| Bioassay in mice revealed, that tachyzoites, bradyzoites and sporozoites that had not been manipulated or artificially separated from their natural environment, were capable of resisting a dose of 250 Gy, whereas tachyzoites of a strain of Toxoplasma of low pathogenicity for mice (ME- 49), obtained by culture in the peritoneal cavity of immunodeppressed mice, sporozoites artificially released from oocysts and bradyzoites artificially released from brain tissue cysts, resisted doses of only 150 and 100 Gy, respectively. These irradiated zoites were able to protect mice against infection and brain cyst formation. It is important to ascertain the sublethal dose of γ irradiation of zoites of Toxoplasma gondii for experimental immunization, so that zoites are capable of penetrating host cells without further multiplication, to elicit immunity without persisting in the host tissues. | |||

| BACKGROUND: The metabolism of cymoxanil [1-(2-cyano-2-methoxyiminoacetyl)-3-ethylurea] and fungicidal cyanooxime analogues was monitored on three phenotypes of Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Fr. differing in their sensitivity towards cymoxanil. For this purpose, labelled [2-14C]cymoxanil was added either to the culture medium of these strains or to its cell-free extract.RESULTS: In the culture medium of the most sensitive strain, four main metabolites were detected. Three were isolated and identified. Cymoxanil was quickly metabolised by at least three concurrent enzymatic pathways: (i) cyclisation leading, after hydrolysis, to ethylparabanic acid, (ii) reduction giving demethoxylated cymoxanil, (iii) hydrolysis followed by reduction and then acetylation leading to N-acetylcyanoglycine. In the cell-free extract of the same strain, only the first and the second of these enzymatic reactions occurred. By comparing the metabolic profile of the most sensitive strain with that of the less sensitive ones, it was shown that the decrease in sensitivity to cymoxanil correlates with a reduced acetylcyanoglycine formation. Among all metabolites, only N-acetylcyanoglycine is active against the most sensitive strain. Moreover, in a culture of this strain, two other fungicidal cyanooximes were also metabolised into this metabolite.CONCLUSION: The formation of N-acetylcyanoglycine may play an important role in the fungitoxicity of cymoxanil and cyanooxime derivatives.
