Mutualism By Natural Selection: Imitation Is Not Just Flattery For Amazon Butterfly Species
Many studies of evolution focus on the benefits to the individual of competing successfully -- those who survive produce the most offspring, in Darwin's classic 'survival of the fittest'. But how does this translate to the evolution of species? A new article reviews an aspect of the natural world that, like survival of the fittest individual, is explained by natural selection: namely, mutualism -- an interaction between species that has benefits for both. The work shows that some species of butterfly that live alongside one another have evolved in ways that, surprisingly, benefit both species.

Immune Cells Reveal Fancy Footwork
Our immune system plays an essential role in protecting us from diseases, but how does it do this exactly? Biologists discovered that before dendritic cells move to the lymph nodes they lose their sticky feet. This helps them to move much faster. Immature dendritic cells patrol the tissues in search of antigens.

Smallpox Vaccination Effective For Decades, Study Suggests
There is concern that bioterrorists might obtain smallpox from a laboratory and release it into the population. However researchers found that lifetime protection is obtained from just one vaccination, even when that vaccination occurred as much as 88 years ago. They conclude that in the event of a smallpox bioterrorist attack, vaccinia smallpox vaccine should be used first on individuals who have not been vaccinated previously.

First live rhinoceros birth from frozen-thawed semen

There may be less than 20,000 rhinoceros in the world, with one species perhaps already extinct and another with possibly only four animals remaining in the wild. As the populations of these animals age and become infirm, successful breeding becomes increasingly difficult. In an article scheduled for publication in Theriogenology, An International Journal of Animal Reproduction, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Berlin, Zoo Budapest and the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, report on the first live birth of a rhinoceros resulting from artificial insemination (AI) with frozen and thawed semen.

Radiation Induced Alterations in Membrane Fluidity, Microtubular Structure, Glycoconjugates and Protein in Leishmania donovani
Considering the invasion strategy of the Leishmania parasite the molecules present on the cell surface of promastigotes are of paramount importance as the parasite membrane antigens are the interface between the parasite and its vertebrate and insect hosts. Their topography and receptor interactions with host cell decide the acceptability, survival, multiplication, pathogenesis or killing of the parasite in the host. Gamma radiation had interesting effects on living cells and proteins, allowing new epitopes to express but parasites presented unequal radiosensitivity, related to their genome organization. After exposure to gamma radiation from Co60 source, Leishmania donovani undergo profound changes in ultrastructure, microviscosity, protein profile and carbohydrate residues of plasma membrane. Upto 20 krad, the membrane integrity was maintained but above this dose the microtubules showed chracteristic fluence dependent changes in the number of protofilaments upon gamma radiation. Agglutination progressively decreased from nonirradiated to irradiated promastigotes. The most prominent epitopes at 53 and 66 kDa were expressed at 10 and 20 krad irradiated parasites surface. It was also indicated that 20 krad was the limiting dose at which cell can survive and compensate for altered conditions by a process known as homeoviscous adaptation so it can remain in the fluid phase even as the environment changes.

Pesticidal seed coats based on azadirachtin-A: release kinetics, storage life and performance
BACKGROUND: Infestation of seeds by pests during storage leads to deterioration in quality. Seed coating is an effective option to overcome the menace. Unlike synthetic fungicidal seed coats, little is known of those based on botanicals. This study aims at developing azadirachtin-A-based pesticidal seed coats to maintain seed quality during storage.RESULTS: Polymer- and clay-based coats containing azadirachtin-A were prepared and evaluated for quality maintenance of soybean seed during storage. Gum acacia, gum tragacanth, rosin, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyethyl methacrylate, methyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and Agrimer VA 6 polymers and the clay bentonite were used as carriers. The time for 50% release (t1/2) of azadirachtin-A into water from the seeds coated with the different coats ranged from 8.02 to 21.36 h. The half-life (T1/2) of azadirachtin-A in the coats on seed ranged from 4.37 to 11.22 months, as compared with 3.45 months in azadirachtin-A WP, showing an increase by a factor of nearly 1.3-3.3 over the latter. The coats apparently acted as a barrier to moisture to reduce azadirachtin-A degradation and prevented proliferation of storage fungi. Polyethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl pyrrolidone were significantly superior to the other polymers. Azadirachtin-A showed a significant positive correlation with seed germination and vigour, and negative correlation with moisture content.CONCLUSION: Effective polymeric carriers for seed coats based on azadirachtin-A are reported. These checked seed deterioration during storage by acting as a barrier to moisture and reduced the degradation of azadirachtin-A. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry

7.36J Foundations of Computational and Systems Biology, Spring 2004 (MIT)
Introduction to computational biology including the fundamentals of protein and nucleic acid sequence analysis, phylogenetic analysis, motif finding, hidden Markov models, and 3D structure prediction and modeling. An overview of emerging fields including expression profiling, quantitative image analysis and the modeling of cellular signal transduction networks are also included. Subject designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students with strong backgrounds in either molecular biology or computer science but not necessarily both. Two self-study tracks are offered, introducing either basic statistical methods and programming (to biologists) or the fundamentals of molecular biology (to computer scientists). Lectures combine both perspectives to illustrate how computation is having a significant impact on modern biology. Description from course home page: Serving as an introduction to computational biology, this course emphasizes the fundamentals of nucleic acid and protein sequence analysis, structural analysis, and the analysis of complex biological systems. The principles and methods used for sequence alignment, motif finding, structural modeling, structure prediction, and network modeling are covered. Students are also exposed to currently emerging research areas in the fields of computational and systems biology.

Redetermination of bis[μ3-1,3,5-triamino-1,3,5-trideoxy-cis-inositolato(3–)]tribismuth(iii) trichloride hexahydrate
The crystal structure of the title compound, [Bi3(C6H12N3O3)2]Cl3·6H2O, which was described in the space group R3 [Hegetschweiler, Ghisletta & Gramlich (1993). Inorg. Chem. 32, 2699–2704], has been redetermined in the revised space group R32 as suggested by Marsh [Acta Cryst. (2002), B58, 893–899]. Accordingly, the significant difference in the Bi—N bond distances of 2.43 (2) and 2.71 (1) Å, as noted in the previous study, proved to be an artifact. As a consequence, the [Bi3(H−3taci)2]Cl6/3 entity (taci is 1,3,5-triamino-1,3,5-trideoxy-cis-inositol) adopts D3 symmetry and the three Bi atoms lie on C2 axes with equal Bi—N bond distances of 2.636 (3) Å. Study raps Web sites touting stem cell therapies (AP)

A cell cluster cultured from embryonic stem cells is seen in this undated handout photo. (National Science Foundation/Handout/Reuters)AP - Consumers should be wary of Web sites from clinics that offer stem cell treatments, says a study that found a lack of firm medical evidence to back up their claims. The Web sites in the study generally portrayed their therapies as safe, effective and ready for routine use, but published research doesn't support that "overoptimistic" picture, the study authors said.
