A randomized double blind comparison of real and placebo acupuncture in IVF treatment
BACKGROUND

Acupuncture has been used during IVF treatment as it may improve outcome, however, there are concerns about the true efficacy of this approach. This randomized double blind study aimed to compare real acupuncture with placebo acupuncture in patients undergoing IVF treatment.

METHODS

On the day of embryo transfer (ET), 370 patients were randomly allocated to either real or placebo acupuncture according to a computer-generated randomization list in sealed opaque envelopes. They received 25 min of real or placebo acupuncture before and after ET. The endometrial and subendometrial vascularity, serum cortisol concentration and the anxiety level were evaluated before and after real and placebo acupuncture.

RESULTS

The overall pregnancy rate was significantly higher in the placebo acupuncture group than that in the real acupuncture group (55.1 versus 43.8%, respectively, P = 0.038; Common odds ratio 1.578 95% confidence interval 1.047–2.378). No significant differences were found in rates of ongoing pregnancy and live birth between the two groups. Reduction of endometrial and subendometrial vascularity, serum cortisol concentration and the anxiety level were observed following both real and placebo acupuncture, although there were no significant differences in the changes in all these indices between the two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Placebo acupuncture was associated with a significantly higher overall pregnancy rate when compared with real acupuncture. Placebo acupuncture may not be inert. Trial registered with HKClinicalTrials.com: number HKCTR-236.

Radiation Induced Alterations in Membrane Fluidity, Microtubular Structure, Glycoconjugates and Protein in Leishmania donovani
Considering the invasion strategy of the Leishmania parasite the molecules present on the cell surface of promastigotes are of paramount importance as the parasite membrane antigens are the interface between the parasite and its vertebrate and insect hosts. Their topography and receptor interactions with host cell decide the acceptability, survival, multiplication, pathogenesis or killing of the parasite in the host. Gamma radiation had interesting effects on living cells and proteins, allowing new epitopes to express but parasites presented unequal radiosensitivity, related to their genome organization. After exposure to gamma radiation from Co60 source, Leishmania donovani undergo profound changes in ultrastructure, microviscosity, protein profile and carbohydrate residues of plasma membrane. Upto 20 krad, the membrane integrity was maintained but above this dose the microtubules showed chracteristic fluence dependent changes in the number of protofilaments upon gamma radiation. Agglutination progressively decreased from nonirradiated to irradiated promastigotes. The most prominent epitopes at 53 and 66 kDa were expressed at 10 and 20 krad irradiated parasites surface. It was also indicated that 20 krad was the limiting dose at which cell can survive and compensate for altered conditions by a process known as homeoviscous adaptation so it can remain in the fluid phase even as the environment changes.

Degradation kinetics and safety evaluation of buprofezin residues in grape (Vitis vinifera L.) and three different soils of India
BACKGROUND: This work was undertaken to determine the preharvest interval (PHI) of buprofezin to minimize its residues in grapes and thereby ensure consumer safety and avoid possible non-compliance in terms of residue violations in export markets. Furthermore, the residue dynamics in three grapevine soils of India was explored to assess its environmental safety.RESULTS: Residues dissipated following non-linear two-compartment first + first-order kinetics. In grapes, the PHI was 31 days at both treatments (312.5 and 625 g a.i. ha-1), with the residues below the maximum permissible intake even 1 h after foliar spraying. Random sampling of 5 kg comprising small bunchlets (8-10 berries) collected from a 1 ha area gave satisfactory homogeneity and representation of the population. A survey on the samples harvested after the PHI from supervised vineyards that received treatment at the recommended dose showed residues below the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.02 mg kg-1 applicable for the European Union. In soil, the degradation rate was fastest in clay soil, followed by sandy loam and silty clay, with a half-life within 16 days in all the soils.CONCLUSION: The recommendation of the PHI proved to be effective in minimizing buprofezin residues in grapes. Thus, this work is of high practical significance to the domestic and export grape industry of India to ensure safety compliance in respect of buprofezin residues, keeping in view the requirements of international trade. Interaction between rantes promoter variant and ccr5delta32 favors recovery from hepatitis b.
Interaction between RANTES promoter variant and CCR5Delta32 favors recovery from hepatitis B. J Immunol. 2008 Dec 1;181(11):7944-7 Authors: Thio CL, Astemborski J, Thomas R, Mosbruger T, Witt MD, Goedert JJ, Hoots K, Winkler C, Thomas DL, Carrington M Recovery from acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection occurs in 95% of adult-acquired infections. A 32-bp deletion in CCR5 (CCR5Delta32), which encodes for a nonfunctional receptor, increases the likelihood of recovery. Using 181 subjects with persistent HBV infection and 316 who had recovered, we tested the hypothesis that an epistatic interaction between functional polymorphisms in RANTES (a CCR5 ligand) and CCR5 impacts recovery. Specific models designed to assess individual contributions of compound genotypes demonstrated that...

Shame on the Cincinnati Zoo [Pharyngula]

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden and the Creation Museum have made a joint marketing agreement and are selling "combo tickets" to get into both attractions for one price.

The Cincinnati Zoo is promoting an anti-science, anti-education con job run by ignorant creationists.

Unbelievable.

Here's a little bit about the Cincinnati Zoo. I've highlighted a few key words and phrases.

Part of the public school system in Cincinnati since 1975, the Zoo hosts a four-year college prepatory program - Zoo Academy. The Cincinnati Zoo is proud to serve as the leading non-formal science educator in Southwest Ohio. Over 300,000 students participate in the Zoo's educational programs annually.

The Zoo has long been successful at captive breeding, starting with trumpeter swans and sea lions back in the 1880s. The Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) was founded in 1986 to strengthen the tradition. The research conducted here has made the Cincinnati Zoo an international leader in the protection and propagation of endangered animals and plants around the world.

Rated by peer zoological parks as one of the best zoos in the nation, the Cincinnati Zoo continues to set the standard for conservation, education and preservation of wild animals and wild spaces. Over 1.2 million people visit the Zoo annually. The Zoo features more than 500 animal and 3,000 plant species, making it one of the largest Zoo collections in the country.

I believe the Cincinnati Zoo has betrayed its mission and its trust in a disgraceful way, by aligning themselves with a creationist institution that is a laughing stock to the rest of the world, and a mark of shame to the United States. I urge everyone to contact the zoo; write to their education and marketing and public relations departments in particular and point out the conflict between what they are doing and what their goal as an educational and research institution ought to be.

While you're at it, it might be even more effective to contact the newsroom at the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Cincinnati weekly, City Beat. Let's raise a stink and give these guys the bad PR they deserve.
