Fertility preservation in adolescent males: experience over 22 years at Rouen University Hospital
BACKGROUND

Sperm banking is a suitable procedure to prevent infertility after cancer therapy in male adolescents. We evaluated the feasibility of semen preservation in 156 adolescents aged between 13 and 20 years and then we assessed fertility outcome after treatment.

METHODS

Age, urogenital history, indications for cryopreservation, histological diagnosis and semen parameters were recorded. Fertility status after treatment was assessed by a questionnaire addressed to those patients who had utilized sperm storage. Post-treatment semen analysis was performed for 22 patients.

RESULTS

Cryopreservation was possible in 88.5% of cases. Azoospermia was detected in 2.6% of the patients at the time of diagnosis. Malignant disease accounted for 84% of our male adolescents. In this type of disease, semen parameters were significantly altered only among patients with metastatic malignant bone tumour. After treatment, nine patients presented azoospermia, five patients achieved pregnancy spontaneously, two achieved it after assisted reproductive technique using fresh ejaculated spermatozoa and one following sperm donation. Three failed with cryopreserved sperm.

CONCLUSIONS

Semen cryopreservation is possible for most adolescents and, regardless of disease type, may be a means of preserving fertility prior to gonadotoxic treatment that might impair the spermatogenesis process.

Naked Scientists 08.07.20 - Discovering Drugs
Drug Discovery: On this week's Naked Scientists, drug development goes under the microscope as we explore two new ways to find the treatments of tomorrow. We find out why size is important when it comes to chemicals that can kill superbugs, and how soil bacteria hold the chemical clues to the next generation of antibiotics. Plus, how sheets of carbon can be used to reveal single atoms of hydrogen beneath the microscope, how scientists have homed in on the part of the brain linked to obsessive compulsive disorder, and why electronically tagging jellyfish can tell us a sea turtle's secrets. Plus, in Kitchen Science, we make strange and unexpected shapes with bubbles!

Effect of Starvation on Some Glycolytic Enzymes in Adult Isoparorchis hypselobagri (Billet, 1898) (Trematoda: Digenea)
The enzymatic assays made on extracts of the adult fluke Isoparorchis hypselobagri demonstrated the presence of hexokinase (HK, EC 2.7.1.1), glycogen phosphorylase (GP, EC 2.4.1.1), phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, EC 5.3.1.9) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27). In the starved fluke all the studied glycolytic enzymes are depleted except glycogen phosphorylase-a activity, which shows increasing trend.

New asperxanthone and asperbiphenyl from the marine fungus Aspergillus sp.
BACKGROUND: Marine fungi are of great importance as potential sources of agricultural pesticide leads. To continue work on new and biologically active metabolites from marine fungi, culture extracts of selected isolates were screened for inhibitory activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), a typical member of the tobamovirus group of plant viruses.RESULTS: A new difuranxanthone, asperxanthone (1), and a new biphenyl, asperbiphenyl (2), as well as seven known unsaturated fatty acid glycerol esters, were isolated from a selected marine fungus, identified as Aspergillus sp. (MF-93), collected in the Quan-Zhou Gulf. Two-dimensional NMR methods and FAB-MS established the structures of the new compounds. Among the compounds, 1 and 2 showed moderate activity (inhibitory rates 62.9 and 35.5% respectively) in inhibiting multiplication of TMV, higher than that of the other seven known lipids but much lower than that of the extract at the identical concentration of 0.2 mg mL-1.CONCLUSION: Two new compounds, asperxanthone and asperbiphenyl, were identified as active components from Aspergillus sp. (MF-93). Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry

7.343 The Radical Consequences of Respiration: Reactive Oxygen Species in Aging and Disease, Fall 2007 (MIT)
This course will start with a survey of basic oxygen radical biochemistry followed by a discussion of the mechanisms of action of cellular as well as dietary antioxidants. After considering the normal physiological roles of oxidants, we will examine the effects of elevated ROS and a failure of cellular redox capacity on the rate of organismal and cellular aging as well as on the onset and progression of several major diseases that are often age-related. Topics will include ROS-induced effects on stem cell regeneration, insulin resistance, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. The role of antioxidants in potential therapeutic strategies for modulating ROS levels will also be discussed. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an interest in using primary research literature to discuss and learn about current biological research in a highly interactive setting. Many instructors of the Advanced Undergraduate Seminars are postdoctoral scientists with a strong interest in teaching.

[mechanisms of signal transduction] amp-activated protein kinase activation increases phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase 3{beta} and thereby reduces camp-responsive element transcriptional activity and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase c gene expression in the liver
AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation reportedly suppresses transcriptional activity of the cAMP-responsive element (CRE) in the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase C (PEPCK-C) promoter and reduces hepatic PEPCK-C expression. Although a previous study found TORC2 phosphorylation to be involved in the suppression of AMPK-mediated CRE transcriptional activity, we herein present evidence that glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) phosphorylation induced by AMPK also plays an important role. We initially found that injecting fasted mice with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR) markedly increased Ser-9 phosphorylation of hepatic GSK3β within 15 min. Stimulation with AICAR or the GSK3β inhibitor SB-415286 strongly inhibited CRE-containing promoter activ...

Racial hygiene 2008? [Gene Expression]

FuturePundit points me to a research paper, Impact of a new national screening policy for Down's syndrome in Denmark: population based cohort study:

Results The number of infants born with Down's syndrome decreased from 55-65 per year during 2000-4 to 31 in 2005 and 32 in 2006. The total number of chorionic villus samplings and amniocenteses carried out decreased from 7524 in 2000 to 3510 in 2006. The detection rate in the screened population in 2005 was 86% (95% confidence interval 79% to 92%) and in 2006 was 93% (87% to 97%). The corresponding false positive rates were 3.9% (3.7% to 4.1%) and 3.3% (3.1% to 3.4%).

Conclusion The introduction of a combined risk assessment during the first trimester at a national level in Denmark halved the number of infants born with Down's syndrome. The strategy also resulted in a sharp decline in the number of chorionic villus samplings and amniocenteses carried out, even before full implementation of the policy.

Atrial conduction and atrial fibrillation: what can we learn from surface ecg?
Atrial conduction and atrial fibrillation: what can we learn from surface ECG? Cardiol J. 2008;15(5):402-7 Authors: Platonov PG Despite the advancements in pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of atrial fibrillation (AF) observed during last decades, available treatment modalities and predictors of their success are still far from optimal. Understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms underlying AF and assessment of atrial electrophysiological properties using easily available non-invasive diagnostic tools such as surface ECG are essential for further improvement of patient-tailored treatment strategies. P-wave duration is generally accepted as the most reliable non-invasive marker of atrial conduction and its prolongation has been associated with history of AF. ...
